Rose Metal Systems Inc. moved quickly when it was hired to help build a new facility where BAE Systems will work on vehicles bound for U.S. forces in conflict zones.
"Every day counts, in terms of getting this equipment to Iraq and Afghanistan," said Steven Rose, president of Cumberland Countybased Rose Metal. The 30-employee company designs, supplies and erects metal buildings.
London-based BAE has a major plant in West Manchester Township, York County, that makes mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicles, known as MRAPs. Those vehicles are designed to withstand the roadside bombs that have plagued American troops in Iraq. The new building will be used to clean the hulls of MRAPs before final assembly, BAE spokeswoman Kelly Flanagan said.
Rose Metal delivered the frame of the building to BAE Nov. 5. The turnaround time was about a month, cutting the typical span by more than half, Rose said. The building was not immediately erected because there was still foundation work to be done.
