NSW: Community units help save hundreds of homes
The New South Wales Fire Brigade says specially trained local residents have helpedto save hundreds of homes from fierce bushfires.
These people are part of Community Fire Units set up to teach locals the basics of firefighting.
More than 400 residents from 25 units fought fires around South Turramurra, north-westof Sydney, as a raging bushfire threatened to destroy hundreds of homes.
Others saved houses on Cross Street at Warrimoo in the Blue Mountains.
Each CFU is made up of about eight to 20 people from a street.
